This week, I had the privilege of visiting one of our church family shut-ins. I wanted to be able to give her some hope and pray with her. She has a hard time keeping her head up, so I got down on the floor to speak to her. As she spoke with me, I knew she was well aware of who I was. In fact, I feel like I was sitting at the feet of a saint who was teaching me what is good. The day was a good one for her, and she was well aware of her surroundings. I’m so glad I went and listened as she taught me. What did she teach me? The reminder of no matter what the circumstances, others are more important than me. In our conversation, she asked about my family. She was sympathetic that I had to cook for a diabetic. What really struck me was her concern for her son! He is her main caregiver. This little lady, who needs help doing so many things, was distressed that her son was working too hard for her benefit. She needs the help, and yet, she has great concern for the giver. My heart was heavy for her as I prayed.
We are all aging each and every day. Our lives change as our bodies begin to give way. However, this doesn’t mean we are done with the work God has planned for us. I learned from an older woman that day. Isn’t that biblical? We all have someone who is older or younger in our lives. These people can be teachers or learners. We all need to do both. God calls us to be involved in the lives of others. What a benefit it is to our personal growth in Him! Youth is very important in our society. It can be easy to jump on that bandwagon, but we can never make ourselves younger. The age we are right now is of a benefit to someone else. We have experiences and lessons we’ve learned to share. However, we can never think we’re done learning. We need to be teachable even in our old age. Perhaps, we’ll learn from someone older or younger. The important thing is to learn, and put into practice what you have learned.
The sharing the gospel with children and younger people is of vital importance. It gives a good foundation of truth for the younger generation. This foundation is so good for us as we age. God never changes even when we do.
“For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O LORD, from my youth.” [Psalm 71:5.]
“So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come.” [Psalm 71:18.]
We have a job to do. In fact, we are to continue to proclaim to others who God is regardless of our age. I’m sure that the lady I visited was not aware that she was teaching me. She was just proclaiming her heart. That’s what I needed to hear. Now, to put into practice loving others well by proclaiming my heart. What does my heart say?
“Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” [1 John 5:12.]
Eternity is coming! We need to spread the good news of Jesus!
